A Jolly Roger Up Ahead: Ships, Sailors and Flags!

Hi there!
I am Arkhip, a thirteen-year-old boy who lives in Moscow. It’s my third time joining this beautiful camp in MMC, and I think this is the best place I have ever been.  Today, we had a lot of activities, and I will tell you about them.

We started our day with warm-up, because we need to be fit. After, we met for our first crew gathering where we learned the expressions for the day. One thing I like about this camp is that we learn new words and idioms each day to expand our vocabulary list. Th word of the day was ‘Collaborate’ and the saying of the day was ‘…as thick as thieves’. In what followed were our lessons. Don’t be scared, lessons here are fun and enjoyable. My crew began with a lesson in the ‘Shipyard’ where we made hand bracelets. Next were English and Sports. During English we practised some listening tests, and I enjoyed them because our teacher took time to take us through. During sports I opted for the swimming pool, and it was really cool.

The next activity was our Crew gathering where we worked on several projects for our evening event. During this time, we divided the crew into three groups. One group worked on making a ship out of cartons, the second worked on the crew’s flag and the last prepared some decorations and cheer songs. It was so wonderful to see how each one was passionately involved. I helped with the design of the crew’s flag, and we shared exciting moments of laughter as we worked.

We then started our evening event, Sports Festival. In this event, we had to compete with other crews in several activities. The event was fun and cool, and helped us to unite our team. Though it wasn’t easy, we were able to do most of the tasks. I would say that our team did a lot of hard work, and I really loved it. I think this day was very interesting and positive and I am eager to know what the subsequent days have for us here. I hope you will start preparing for the next session.

Memorable moments, education, and enjoyment are all associated with summer camps. Not only does this year’s English Summer Camp here at MMC offer the ideal balance of activities that give staff and campers lifelong memories, but it has also proven to be another success. David Owusu-Mensah is my name, a citizen of Ghana in the western part of Africa.  As a Captain at this year’s camp, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative power of this incredible experience. Join me as we delve into the adventures, challenges, and joyous moments that have made this year’s camp truly unforgettable.

From the fresh morning excitement to the heartwarming evening festivities, the camp has been a hub of laughter, learning, and lasting friendships. Our crew’s activities began with a workshop during which we made bracelets. It was amazing to help cadets complete their project as we used simple but funny approaches – over, over…under, under – after their first time was unsuccessful. The smile on their faces at the end of the project was so heartwarming. The next lesson was English. I would say that here our English lessons are edutainment. Cadets enjoyed the lessons so much that they didn’t want it to end. Next was sports where we played volleyball. The extent of love and support observed was superb. Most of the cadets hadn’t played volleyball or didn’t share interest in such sports but they were filled with joy at the end of this lesson. This joy materialized because the more skilled players patiently and passionately took the time to teach the fundamentals, breaking down skills and giving advice. Whether their attempts were successful or not, they supported one another with excitement, fostering a spirit of unity and support. It was encouraging to watch the players who had been hesitant at first gain confidence, hit the ball with renewed vigour, and celebrate their wins with one another as the game went on.

This team spirit was ideal for us to continue with our next lesson during the crew gathering. During this period, we engaged in several team-building games. These games were challenging and tested the cadets’ resilience. Nonetheless, the determination of these young, smart, and vibrant cadets was remarkable. They never felt discouraged, no matter how many times they failed to complete the tasks. Instead, they focused on the goal, supporting each other every step of the way to achieve it. Similar team-building exercises were held in the evening, but this time there was competition between all the crews in the camp. Even though it appeared to be a competition, everyone passionately and sincerely supported the other teams. There was an obvious sense of solidarity and sportsmanship among the cadets as they supported both their rivals and fellow teammates.

There was a lot of laughter and cheering in the competitive atmosphere, which made it seem more fun to participate than to win. Every challenge brought out the best in everyone, demonstrating their capacity for cooperation and mutual appreciation for each other’s accomplishments. By the end of the night, it was evident that the real triumph was found in the memories created and the friendships that were strengthened. As I reflect on my time here, I am reminded of the joy and positivity that radiated from every participant. This camp is a nurturing environment for the development of critical life skills and the promotion of meaningful connections, in addition to being a place for enjoyment and adventure.

As we look forward to future camps, the memories of this summer will serve as a reminder of the incredible potential within each camper and the power of community. Here’s to many more summers of laughter, learning, and lasting friendships.
