Volunteers and employees in any position, for any length of time, can expect great benefits and rewards for working here at the International Youth Center. As well as broadening your horizons, meeting lots of new people from all around the world, sharing your culture and English-language skills and improving your own language skills, international volunteers and employees will have the opportunity to enjoy further benefits.
Daily Hours
Daily working hours vary between jobs and depend on the nature of the program. For example, camp counselors will work between 5-7 hours formally per day, but have free time while specialist counselors run English classes, sports, arts & crafts etc. They will, however have to spend some time planning and coming up with ideas and games, and will have to be ‘on duty’ at certain other times of the day on a rotating basis. Click here for details of the camp counselor daily responsibilities, although these will vary depending on which program is running. English teachers normally teach around 4-5 hours per day; they will also need to plan lessons, organize and supervise tests. Every evening after a meeting at 10pm, staff have free time. In the staff rooms are seating areas, a fridge, kettle and internet access: ideal for relaxing. See the facilities section for more details and photos of accommodation.
Weeknight Volunteer Socials
Usually on Wednesdays, staff are encouraged come to a small social get-together. There is often alcohol, snacks, music or games/challenges organized. Birthday parties with spreads of Russian snacks and cakes happen regularly. In July 2013, the American volunteers celebrated Independence Day together with the Russian and British staff, with cocktails, carrot cake, and lots of national pride.
Days Off
Staff get one full day off per week. This is normally used for expenses-paid trips to the nearest big cities of Yaroslavl and Kostroma. Here the staff can enjoy sightseeing, or just relax in a restaurant or bar. Staff travel by either private minibus or train. If desired, you can enjoy boat trips, theater trips, museum & art gallery visits and guided tours by your Russian colleagues who call these towns home. Other activities that staff have enjoyed during days off have included long Banya sessions at IYC (with lots of food and drink), or even camping or hiking in the nearby woods, using the Forest Camp as a base for pitching tents or cooking up a barbeque.
Benefits Between Programs
If staff are staying in Russia for more than one program at a time, there will be at least two days free in between for them to pursue their own interests in Russia. Transport to Moscow on either coach or train can be organized, and a hostel in the center will be paid for if desired. Alternatively, staff can organize their own trip, or spend their time exploring the local area.
Of course, all facilities at IYC are available for use by our international staff. Please get in touch if you have any further questions.
