I really love MMC!

Hello, Dudes! My name is Lyuba. Today was a very cool day. The weather was warm, but rainy. We woke up at 8:00 a.m., then we had a warm up and a breakfast. In this camp, food is really healthy & tasty.  Читать далее…

During our group time we have chosen a leader of the day. And our chiefs told us about our day. We had a PERFORMANCE. After tribe time we had different lessons as always. Then lunch, nap time and stations (they is interesting activities).

Our performance was about some problems with translation. I played the role of Vera, my counselor. I think our performance was excellent! But we didn’t take first place. But our tribe did our best and I hope we can win two bricks next time.

This year we need to collect bricks on our ritual pyramid. I feel the spirit of the competition and really enjoy the theme of our program this year. I really love MMC! It is a very cool camp, and I think I will come back next year))))))))
And this camp is the best!!!!!

РУБРИКА ПЕДАГОГА

My name is Rae Hushion. I am from Huntington, New York, but I go to university in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This past year, my home in New York was occupied by my mom, my dog, two international students – Ahn from Vietnam and Chloe from South Korea – and me, whenever I was on vacation from school. My home at university this past year was in Russian House. My university has a large focus on internationalism, languages, and cross-cultural communication; because of this, everyone is required to take four semesters of a language or demonstrate equivalent skill. We have classes beyond those four semesters, language clubs, and language houses for those who wish to further improve their language skills and cultural knowledge. I chose to live in Russian House because I wished to improve my Russian, and it was a wonderful decision. Four people lived in Russian House: one native speaker, Lera, and three students. Listening to and speaking Russian everyday really helped me to improve my skills and cultural knowledge beyond the classroom, and gave me more confidence for my first journey to Russia.
At MMC, I am able to further practice my Russian(especially with the new Russian classes for foreigners) and do what I love – crafting. I am the Workshop Leader. Due to the theme of the session, Call of the Ancestors, the kids know Workshop as Craftshop and me as “Artisa”(similar to “artist”). Every day, I work to prepare materials, examples, and presentations for each new project. In the presentations, I include words of the day that are not only important for the project, but also relevant to normal life. For the kids who are more advanced at English, I also include idioms and sayings which use the words of the day. After introducing the words, I have them collect the materials and instruct them on what to do.
Today in Workshop we made Happiness Drums. I used the word of the day – “impact” – to explain to the kids how our drums are able to make music. To make the drums, we used cardboard, paper, bamboo sticks, plasticine, glue, thread, and beads. We then used markers to decorate the drums. The kids had a lot of fun, creating something from scratch with their own hands. Not just something, but something they could use and enjoy even after it was completed.
During Stations at Options(a time when they can choose to go to Craftshop, Sports, English, or something like zumba or yoga), the project of the day was Straw Hand. We used straws, scissors, tape, and string to make a plastic hand that can grab things. Some of the kids and I worked on this project together, and some finished up projects that they hadn’t completed during normal lesson. However, half of the kids during Stations were preparing for their performance. Yesterday, each tribe had to put together a performance relating to the theme “Difficulties of Translation.” Kids were making posters, props, and parts of costumes. I am continually impressed by their creativity, dedication, and their desire to do more. Even without use of the internet, they are able to make almost everything they need. I look forward to spending the next week and a half with them, teaching them and helping to foster and support their creativity, as well as working together to create new and interesting projects.
Best, Artisa Rae.
